The All new Omega Observatory Constellation
This year Omega has surprised us with an all new Constellation Collection that pays homage to the original 1952 Constellation, Omega’s flagship collection that featured chronometer-certified movements.
The Observatory Constellation is not a one to one recreation of these 1950s and 60s vintage watches but they do carry many of the design details that has made these timepieces very desirable among watch collectors. And the main feature is the dial, with is dodecagonal pie pan design which includes grooves on the 12 facets just like the original Constellation of the 50s.
This new collection is offer in O-Megasteel (the most affordable option), Moonshine gold, Sedna gold, Canopus gold and platinum-gold. This is the first time that Omega offers all four of their proprietary gold alloys within a single collection.
Now, one of the main differences between the original and the Observatory, is the size of the timepiece. The original was offered with a 35mm case while the new collection is offered with a 39.4mm case that has a lug to lug measurement of 47.20mm. Although is 4.4mm larger, it’s still suitable for most wrist sizes.
All metal variants come fitted with a leather strap. With the exception of the Moonshine gold which can be purchase with a leather strap or a Moonshine gold bracelet.
Under the hood, the Observatory features the world’s first two-hand watch to achieve Chronometer certification approved by METAS. This is caliber 8915, a movement that is tested for 25 days to measure temperature, position and atmospheric pressure throughout.
Caliber 8915 is an automatic movement that works at 3.5 hertz and delivers up to 60 hours of power reserve.
The caliber also features the observatory motif in the rotor. With the exception of the O-Megasteel version, all the precise alloy variants comes with an 18K Moonshine gold rotor and balance bridge.
The Observatory Constellation is more than just a timepiece, it’s a statement of intent. And a pice that will stand the test of time.
