Breguet Classique Power Reserve Moon Phase 18K White Gold — The Daniel Roth-Era Classique (Ref. 3130BB/11/986)
Some watches are important because of their complications. Others because of their rarity. The Breguet Classique Power Reserve Moon Phase reference 3130BB/11/986 is particularly compelling because of what it represents in Breguet’s modern history — a watch that emerged during the period when legendary watchmaker Daniel Roth was helping restore Breguet to its position among the great names of haute horlogerie.
What Is the Breguet Classique Power Reserve Moon Phase 3130?
Virtually Every Breguet Signature in One Dial
With its 18K white-gold case, hand-guilloché silvered dial, moon-phase display, date, and power-reserve indication, the 3130 brings together nearly every visual signature associated with Abraham-Louis Breguet. At first glance it looks unmistakably traditional; look closer and the amount of detail packed into such a restrained design becomes remarkable. This is Breguet at its most classical — a dress watch that draws its entire argument from proportion and finishing rather than from size or complication count.
The Daniel Roth Connection
For collectors, this may be the most important part of the story. During the 1970s and 1980s, Daniel Roth played a central role in reviving Breguet’s classical watchmaking identity. The 3130 was among the early watches created during this period, drawing inspiration from historic Breguet pocket watches rather than contemporary design trends. Roth helped re-establish many of the elements now instantly associated with modern Breguet — the guilloché dial, the coin-edge caseband, the straight lugs, the Roman numerals, the blued hands, and the historically inspired complications. The 3130 became one of the defining watches of that revival, and Phillips describes it as one of Breguet’s earliest important models from the Daniel Roth era.
Case Design: 18K White Gold, Classical Proportions
The White-Gold Case and Coin-Edge Caseband
The case is crafted from 18K white gold and measures approximately 36.3mm in diameter. At only around 7mm thick, it has the elegant proportions expected from a true classical dress watch. Breguet’s characteristic finely fluted — or coin-edge — caseband adds texture without becoming decorative for decoration’s sake, and straight, individually styled lugs extend from the case to contribute to the almost pocket-watch-like character of the design. There is no attempt to make the 3130 appear sporty or oversized. Everything is about proportion — and decades after its introduction, those proportions still work beautifully.
The Dial: A Guilloché Masterpiece
Multiple Engine-Turned Patterns
If there is one reason to spend time studying a Breguet 3130, it is the dial. The silvered dial uses multiple engine-turned guilloché patterns, separating the various indications visually without heavy borders or contrasting colours. The central section, the power-reserve sector, and the calendar displays each receive their own treatment, creating tremendous texture when viewed under changing light. Surrounding the centre is a traditional chapter ring with elegant black Roman numerals. And, of course, the dial carries one of Breguet’s greatest signatures: the famous blued-steel pomme hands, often simply referred to today as “Breguet hands.” The blue against the silver is subtle from a distance but spectacular up close.
Asymmetric Layout Executed with Harmony
Perhaps the most interesting part of the 3130 is its layout. Instead of arranging its complications symmetrically, Breguet allows them to occupy different areas of the dial: the power reserve between approximately 10 and 11 o’clock, the moon phase between approximately 1 and 2 o’clock, and the pointer date at 6 o’clock. On paper, that arrangement sounds unbalanced. On the wrist, it is anything but. The power reserve sweeps downward from the upper-left portion of the dial while the moon phase provides visual weight on the opposite side, and the circular date display at 6 o’clock anchors the composition. It is asymmetry executed with remarkable harmony — and it became one of the most recognisable designs in modern Breguet.
The Moon Phase
Of all the complications, the moon phase is arguably the most romantic. The display features a golden moon travelling across a deep blue night sky. Later examples of the 3130 are particularly attractive because the moon itself can feature an engraved face, adding old-world character; earlier generations used a simpler moon without the facial engraving, making dial variation an interesting subject for collectors.
Movement: Breguet Calibre 502.DR — Ultra-Thin Automatic
The Frédéric Piguet 71 Foundation
Under the dial is Breguet’s calibre 502 family, with later examples commonly identified as the 502.DR or 502.DR1. The architecture originates from the ultra-thin Frédéric Piguet 71 — one of the great thin automatic bases of its era — which provided an excellent foundation for Breguet’s complicated automatic movement. The calibre was adapted to accommodate the moon phase, date, and power-reserve indications while maintaining an exceptionally thin profile. That thinness is a major reason Breguet could produce such a complicated watch in a case only around 7mm thick, and it gives the 3130 a level of refinement that is becoming increasingly rare in modern complicated watches.

The 3130 vs. the 3137: A Collector's Distinction
Where the Two References Differ
The 3130 can easily be confused with the later Breguet 3137, because the dial architecture is extremely similar. The biggest difference is around the back. The 3130 traditionally uses a solid caseback, while the later 3137 introduced a sapphire exhibition back, allowing the owner to admire the decorated automatic movement and rotor. Phillips dates that transition to around 1990, and notes the 3130 eventually evolved into the 3137.
Why the 3130 Carries Greater Historical Weight
For some collectors, the 3137’s visible movement makes it more visually impressive. But the 3130 arguably carries greater historical importance because it represents the earlier design associated directly with Breguet’s revival during the Roth era. That makes the choice between them especially interesting — the 3137 offers the movement display, while the 3130 offers the closer connection to the moment the modern Breguet Classique identity was established.

Why Buy the Breguet Classique 3130?
Breguet at Its Most Traditional
The Breguet Classique Power Reserve Moon Phase 3130BB/11/986 represents Breguet at its most traditional — and perhaps at its most beautiful. The approximately 36mm white-gold case may seem modest by contemporary standards, but that is precisely what gives the watch its elegance. There is no unnecessary size, no oversized branding, and no attempt to follow modern sports-watch trends. Instead, attention goes directly to that extraordinary dial. For a collector who appreciates traditional haute horlogerie — and especially one who appreciates Breguet — the 3130 is the kind of watch that becomes more interesting the longer it is studied.
A Defining Watch of the Breguet Revival
Beyond its beauty, the 3130 carries genuine historical significance as one of the defining watches of the Daniel Roth-era revival — the period that re-established the guilloché dial, the coin-edge caseband, and the historically inspired complications as the core of the modern Breguet Classique identity. It does not demand attention. It rewards it. For the collector who values the origin of Breguet’s modern design language over the movement display of the later 3137, the 3130 is the more historically resonant of the two references.
